What is a dual battery system isolator?

A dual battery system isolator is an electrical component that is fitted between the main cranking battery and your auxiliary battery. When the engine is running and the alternator charging your cranking battery, the isolator will keep the auxiliary battery isolated until the cranking battery is recharged. Once the cranking battery is recharged to an adequate level, the isolator will engage, allowing power to also be sent to the auxiliary battery. Alternatively, while power is being drained from your auxillary battery, once the voltage drops to a set point, the isolator disengages the connection to the cranking battery, preventing the auxiliary battery from draining your cranking battery and effectively leaving you without any power to start your engine. In the bush without help, this is not good! Even with help, a little embarrasing!
